Shakespeare in the American West
The American West might have been wild, but mountain men, cowboys, shady ladies, and prospectors sure loved their Shakespeare. In the 19th-century, Shakespearean mines, towns, and theaters sprang up all over. Roz's scholarship on this subject is mine, conducted for an article titled "How the Bard Won the West," which I wrote for Smithsonian magazine (August, 1998).
