Not your typical hero of medicine and science, Lady Mary was:

· A poet and writer of romances, plays, and articles. Also a diarist and superb letter-writer.
· The daughter of a duke and the wife of one of Britain's wealthiest men.
· Witty and brilliant; the friend of poets, intellectuals, and politicians - Britain's best and brightest
· Rumored to have been the mistress of King George I.
· Reckoned one of the most beautiful women in the kingdom until smallpox destroyed her looks in 1715, when she was 26.

Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689-1762)

How am I chang'd! Alas, how am I grown
A frightful spectre to myself unknown!

-Lady Mary Wortley Montagu
